Whitewashed Four Post Bed

Earlier this month, Adam delivered and set up this custom queen sized whitewashed four post bed, just in time for the homeowner to host a family wedding (in Orange County, New York).

The client desired a simple looking bed with no canopy and substantial, chunky 3” posts with tapered legs. The tear drop shaped bolt-covers blend right in with the legs, which were constructed of figured Quilted Sycamore. The remainder of the bed is Maple, and a bit of wood grain shows through the finish.

Antiqued King Platform Bed with Storage

This king sized platform bed with six storage drawers turned out beautifully. The wood has been carefully antiqued and stained a dark chocolate tone. It features raised panels with beaded openings, a molding at the floor, and rounded corners with a cove detail that highlights the grain pattern in the Sassafras wood. All of the edges have been eased and softened to prevent bruised shins- some modern platform beds can be mildly dangerous with the exposed sharp corners. The client chose oil rubbed bronze 4” pulls which look perfect with the color of the bed. There are inserts for a couple of the drawers to provide smaller storage nooks in top of the deep storage spaces.

The client wrote, “Its stunning and perfect and we couldn’t be happier – beyond our expectations, truly. Thank you!!!” (E.B., Staten Island)

Custom Maple Murphy Bed

This Maple Murphy bed and matching dresser with octagonal mirror make good use of space in an apartment on the upper east side of Manhattan.

The Maple has a light rosy stain that compliments the parquet oak floor. Each of the nine dresser drawers glide on a soft-close self-closing drawer slide. The bookcase by the bed has a push-to-open door at the bottom and a slide out shelf to use as a nightstand for a reading lamp, book, and glass of water.

No metal hardware was used to keep the look clean, modern, and minimal.

In the shop: Four Post bed with Live Edge headboard

This poster bed, constructed of hand selected Pennsylvania walnut, features a live edge slab as the headboard. The rough edges have been chiseled and sanded away, but the natural contours of the tree’s exterior remain. It is truly one of a kind and celebrates the essence of the tree. The posts on this one are octagonally tapered, like a pencil. When it is finished it will have canopy rails and finials at the top. This piece was commissioned by a client in Pottsville, PA.

Bedroom furniture

Here is a grouping of original furniture in a bedroom setting. The large armoire, bookshelf, dresser, and poster bed are all built out of walnut.

The natural cherry bedside changing table does triple duty as nightstand and dresser. The tall painted hutch has hidden storage and display spaces. It would work well in a more public spot in a home, such as a dining room or family room. Grey is a versatile neutral color that complements most decor.

Painted Bedroom Furniture

This bed and nightstand were commissioned by the Philadelphia based design & construction firm, Rissay Ltd, for their complete overhaul of an old city “trinity” home. Their designer sent us photos of a bed and nightstand: they liked the design, and needed us to build a customized version to maximize the very small bedroom space. The original pieces of furniture were painted off-white.

The new bedroom furniture was painted a dark grey color (called Anthracite), topped with a subtle warm brown glaze, and protected by a satin sheen varnish. The center panels of the bed as well as the countertop on the three-drawer nightstand were distressed and stained a complementary cherry tone. The bed features turned finials, a scalloped footboard, matching wooden teardrop-shaped bolt covers, and a curved headboard with bead board paneling. The headboard was constructed with mortise and floating tenon joinery so that it could be completely disassembled in order to squeeze up the narrow, winding staircase. The partners were pleased and their client was moved in this weekend.
